THE FLUORINATION OF URANIUM TETRA-FLUORIDE WITH CHLORINE TRIFLUORIDE (in Russian)
UF/sub 4/ was fluorinated with ClF/sub 3/, and the yield of UF/sub 6/ was determined as a function of temperature from 18 to 300 deg C. The reaction 3UF/sub 4/ + 2ClF/sub 3/ yields 3UF/sub 6/ + Cl/sub 2/(1) takes place in the condensed state. The reaction rate increases with temperature with a mnximum at 50 deg C with a decrease in yield of UF/sub 6/ with a further increase in temperature. The formation of U/sub 4/F/sub 17/, U/sub 2/F/sub 9/ UF/sub 4/ begins at 100 deg C accordin g to the following reactions: 12UF/sub 4/ + ClF/sub 3/ yields 3U/sub 4/F/sub 17/ + 1/2 Cl/sub 3U/sub 4/F/sub 17/ + ClF/sub 3/ yields 6U/sub 2/F/sub 9/ + ClF/sub 3/ yields 6UF/sub 5/ + 1/2Cl/sub 2/(4). Reactions (2) and (3) predominate up to 100 deg C. Almost pure UF/sub 5/ is found at 150 deg C. The UF/sub 5/ reacts relatively slowly with ClF/sub 3/ as follows: 3UF/sub 5/ + ClF/sub 3/ yields 3UF/sub 6/ + 1/2Cl /sub 2/(5). The yield of UF/sub 6/ from reaction (5) increases from a minimum at 150 deg C continuously to 300 deg C. Comparative experiments show that ClF/sub 3/ is a more effective fluorinating agent than fluorine. (TTT)
