THE PREPARATION OF RHENIUM BY FLUORINATION OF THE METAL WITH CHLORINE TRIFLUORIDE (in Russian)

Fluorination of rhenium metal was carried out at 300 ts C with the use of ClF/sub 3/ as the fluorinating agent in order to avoid the formation of rhenium oxyfluorides which are obtained by direct fluorination with fluorine gas. ReF/sub 6/, with an excess of ClF/sub 3/, was collected in a receiver and crystallized from anhydrous HF in the form of large light-yellow crystals of the solvate ReF/sub 6/ . xCIF/sub 6/. Pure ReF/sub 6/ was obtained by distillation in a current of hydrogen at 50 ts C in a platinum tube and by holding in a vacuum at -70 ts C for 4 hr to eliminate traces of Cl/sub 2/ and HF. The melting point of the product ReF/sub 6/ was found to be 18.7 0.1 ts C. The analyses of the product showed 62.4% Re and 38.2% F compared with theoretical values of 62.04% Re and 37.96% F for ReF/sub 6/. Chlorine could not be found in the product. (TTT)
