RESEARCH ON THE PRESENCE OF Sr IN MARINE PLANKTON IN RELATION TO THE ECOLOGY OF ACANTHARIA (in Italian)

Journal Article · · Pubbl. Staz. Zool. Napoli
OSTI ID:4706621
The possibility ls suggested that Acantharia, because of their specific accumulation of strontium, may be involved in the problems concerning the fixation and circulation of its radioactive isotopes. The chemical and mineralogical structure of the spicules of Acantharia is shown through radiographic analyses with the Welssenberg method and was found to be monocrystals'' of celestite. A correlation between the total content of strontium in plankton and the presence of Acantharia is shown, and the factors possibly affecting this correlation are discussed. A first report of the species found and their relative frequency is given, and episodes of flowering'', that is an absolute prevalence of a single species, are described. The different situation presented by Tyrrhenian and high Adriatic seas in relation to the distribution of Acantharia is pointed out, and the possible causes are suggested. The effects of Tyrrhenian and high Adriatic seas in relation to the distribution of Acantharia are related. (auth)
