STUDIES ON THE ECOLOGY OF ACANTHARIA IN RELATION TO THE CIRCULATION OF Sr IN THE SEA. Progress Report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4079005
The content of inorganic salts of Sr in the skeleton of Acantharia was determined. From the results of the chemical analysis and from the counting of Acantharia in plankton from various locations, a positive correlation was found between Sr and Acantharia in plankton. Plankton collected from various locations in the Mediterranean Sea during 1960 through Sept. 1963 was analyzed for /sup 90/ Sr content. Analytical procedures are discussed. Measurements were also made on the /sup 90/Sr content in sea water and cuttle ftsh bones collected during the same period of time. Attempts to breed Acantharia in the laboratory and the preparation of autoradiograms of Acantharia are described. Sediments from the Ligurian coastal sea bottom were analyzed for gross BETA radioactivity. (C.H.)
