EFFECTS OF X-IRRADIATED TUMOR CELLS ON SPONTANEOUS MAMMARY TUMOR RECURRENCES IN C3H MICE

Spontaneous breast tumors were removed surgically or by radiotherapy, from C3H mice and the rate of local recurrence was tabulated with and without intraperitoneal implantation of lethally x-irradiated (10000 r) isologous breast tumor cells. The incidence of recurrence was 100% in animals treated with radiotherapy (2 doses of 2500 r at a 1 week interval) without inoculation of x- irradiated cells. When lethally x-irradiated cells were inoculated, the recurrence rate was reduced to 77%. When the primary tumor was removed surgically, the control recurrence rate was 30%, while in animals receiving intraperitoneal x-irradiated cells it was increased to 53%. Thus, injections of irradiated cells exerted a beneficial effect on tumor-bearing mice subjected to radiotherapy and a harmful effect on those treated surgically, as far as recurrences were concerned. The increased recurrence rate after surgery following injection of irradiated tumor cells supports the previous suggestions that cancers are stimulated by cell death. (TCO)
