PROCESS FOR POLYMERIZING UNSATURATED ALDEHYDES USING IONIZING RADIATION AND RESULTING POLYMERS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4701824

A method is described for polymerizing acrolein (CH/sub 2/: CHCHO) or alpha -methylacrolein, by exposing an aqueous solution of these compounds containing 0.001 to 20% of an acid to 10/sup 5/ to 10/sup 8/ rad of protons, electrons, or x rays at 0 to 100 deg C. The acid used may be sulfuric, phosphoric, or p-toluenesulfonic. The aqueous medium also contains a non-ionic surface-active agent. The conditions are described under which an acrolein polymer may be formed that is soluble in SO/sub 2/ and sodium bisulfite. (T.F.H.)
