PROCESS FOR POLYMERIZING UNSATURATED MONOMERS USING IONIZING RADIATION
Patent
·
OSTI ID:4748604
A process is outlined for preparing high-molecularweight polymers from unsaturated monomers, particularly unsaturated aldehydes such as acrolein. These polymers are colorless and water-insoluble but are soluble in aqueous SO/sub 2/, bisulfite, and basic solutions. The process comprises preparing an aqueous medium of the monomer and a small amount of a polysulfonic acid derivative of a polymer of an unsaturated aldehyde, and exposing the medium to high-energy ionizing radiation. The amount of the derivative in the medium is 0.01 to 10% by weight of the monomer. (D.L.C.)
