OSTI ID:4410013

Cyclic oligomer of formaldehyde is polymerized in the presence of thiocyanic ester and acetal. It is convenient to irradiate the polymerizing system by ionizing radiations before and/or in the course of the polymerization at a dose of 10/sup 2/2 to 10/sup 8/ rads. The thiocyanic ester has a geneaai formula of R-SCN, where R is a substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon radical. The acetal is cyclic or chain acetai such an methylal, ethylal, and 1,3-dioxane. The thiocyanic ester and the acetal may be added respectively at a concentration between 0.001 to 10% and 0.001 to 15% separately or combinatively. In the case of radiation, the acetal must exist during the polymerization. This process is characterized in that the polymenization yield increases greatly and that the polymer having various molecular weights may be easily obtained by controlling an amount of acetal or the dose of radiation. In an example, 1 g of tetraoxan mixed with 3% methyl thiocyanate and 1.0% methylal is introduced into a glass ampoule. The sealed ampoule is irradiated with /sup 60/Co gamma rays for 2 hr to a dose of 10/sup 6/ rads at -78 deg . Polymerization takes place at 105 deg C. The resulting polymer is a white crystalline powder whose melting point is 166 to 172 deg C and whose yieid is 99%. (JA)
