A DIGITAL LINEAR RATEMETER

A new type of linear ratemeter is described. This has an action simiiar to that of the ordinary diode-pump type, but the process is purely digital and the reading is displayed in binary form on a set of lamps. This ratemeter has many advantages, including complete freedom from saturation error and a very small calibration error, as the rates measured are relative to the frequency of an internal crystal-controlled oscillator. A meter display may be provided by conversion, if required. The instrument can be made very flexible, giving any speed required in binary steps over a wide range, with nearly the maximum accuracy statistically possible for random input pulses. While the circuits are more complicated than those of the ordinary linear ratemeter, they are mainly repetitive and are very suitable for construction by modern techniques for semiconductor components. Corrected for dead-time, the reading of the unit built is accurate to 0.1% to well over 10/sup 5/ cps. (auth)
