THERAPEUTIC IMPLICATIONS OF STRONTIUM-85 AND CALCIUM-47 UPTAKE BY BONE METASTASES FROM BREAST CARCINOMA

With the use of whole-body scanning after the administration of tracer doses of calcium-47 and/or strontium-85 it was possible to detect bone lesions not otherwise detectable by the usual means. Results suggest that the yield in finding occult lesions will be greater in patients with symptoms than in the asymptomatic ones, although the latter group is much too small to draw a more definitive conclusion. One of our studies suggests that labeling of the skeleton with a single tracer dose of strontium-85 may help reveal the presence of a new bone lesion several months later. This method of early detection of one of the common metastatic sites of breast cancer may lead to earlier treatment and thus possibly to improved remission length and survival of patients. (auth)
