A reactor design, primarily applicable to fast heterogeneous reactors in which the reactor can be shut down by removing part of the core, is patented. The removable part is independently supported in the core by a support capable of moving the part between an active position and a displaced position. Variations in the design include a reactor core consisting of 2 or more parts, all of which are movable, and a reactor core consisting of 2 parts, both of which can be moved to the same displaced position, so that only l fuel charging and discharging station is required. Various methods of displacing the core parts are described. (M.P.G.)
