A core is described comprising a series of regions at least one of which is movable between an active position in which it fits in the remaining core and an inactive position in which the core is subcritical. For shutting down the reactor this movable region is quickly moved from the active to the inactive position. More generally, all the regions of the reactor are independently supported. A movement of the corresponding supports brings said regions from the;ictive into the inactive position and vice-versa. Preferably, this movement consists in a translation in order to separate the corresponding region from the core and a succeeding rotation in order to bring it into a position in alignment with the charging and discharging facilities.
