A nuclear reactor comprises a fixed central core region and a marginal region the sections of which are adapted to move laterally in order to control the reactivity of the reactor. This method of controlling the reactivity is suitably used in boiling water reactors having a central core iegion, through which a forced water circulation is provided, and a marginal region with at least a partial natural circulation. Preferably the central region is limited by a series of vertical plane surfaces, each covered with a section of the marginal region pivotally mounted at its upper end while a steering rod, coupled with the lower extremity of said section, serves for moving it in lateral direction between an inner and an outer position and vice-versa. For security this section tends to occupy the outer position if the connection with the steering rod is broken. (HB)
