IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO NUCLEAR REACTORS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4028444
A shut-down rod for a nuclear reactor controlled by the difference of pressures normally present within the reactor pressure vessel is described. Preferably this shutdown rod has a tubular shape and is adapted to slide within a vertical reactor channel so that in the case of danger, it may be projected by a spring and by gravity from a retracted position outside the core to a position inside the core. A telescopic unit is provided in order to bring the rod back into the original position. It is disposed within the control rod, the lower end of the inner tube of which is provided with means to couple with the lower end of the rod. The tubes slide in a fluid-tight way on each other and on an inner and an outer guiding tube. The movement of the telescopic unit is controlled by the difference of pressures present above and under this unit. The coupling means are also controlled by pressure differences acting on bellows.
