A reactor of the fast and materiais testing type is designed whose fuel elements are movable transversely between loading and unloading stations, the unloading station being located laterally outside the core region. The advantages of such a reactor is that loading and unloading are effected outside the core so that their effects on reactivity is minimized, and that the reactor can be controlled by moving the core sections apart, as described in British Patent 907,391.
