In vitro investigations concerning radiation protection were done with 1% solutions of bovine serum albumin using a dose between 1 and 6 million r. Using the ultracentrifugal pattern the percentage of unchanged albumin showed the protective effect. Sulfur-containing substances investigated were: cysteine, thioglycol, thiourea, thiomalonic acid, BAL-sodiumsulfonate, 5- mercaptopyridoxine, and 5mercaptomethylpyridine. Aromatic substances investigated were: adrenaline, tyramine, histamine, nicotinamide, Nabenzoate, synkayvite, serotonin, tryptamine, and tryptophan. All substances show a radiation protective effect. It was obvious, that 15 to 23 moles are necessary to protect l mole of albumin, independent of the chemical structure. The problems of the hydrogen transfer as a protection mechanism and the importance of the SS- and SR-groups in the albumin molecule are discussed. (auth)
