HETEROGENEOUS NUCLEAR REACTOR

A heterogeneous reactor especially a boiling water reactor comprises a heat transfer medium flowing in a circuit closed within the reactor vessel, the circuit comprises pairs of vertical tubes enclosing the fuel elements and being connected together by a U and while the reactor coolant flows in upwards direction between the tubes. Means are provided to increase the heat exchange from the heat transfer medium to the coolant, when the former flows in a direction opposite to the coolant flow, and to decrease the exchange when it flows in the same direction as the coolant. Preferably this means comprises cooling fins on the tubes for increasing the heat exchange and a thermal isolation liner within the tubes in order to decrease it. Suitably several of the tube pairs are connected in series between a common entrance header and two exit headers of semicircular shape, while two pumps are provided to circulate the heat transfer medium from the exit headers to the entraace header. Preferably the whole of the tube pairs is enclosed within the reactor vessel by a dividing wall open at its ends in order to improve the natural circulation of the reactor coolant. (IIB)
