Title: IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO NUCLEAR REACTOR HEAT EXCHANGER UNITS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4028658

A nuclear reactor installation where the reactor core and the heat exchangers are enclosed in the same pressure vessel was considered. The pressure vessel had a cylindrical shape and was provided with an inner deflector cylinder spaced from the pressure vessel wall, such as to form a path for an upward flow of coolant within the deflector cylinder and a path for a downward flow in the annular interspace between the deflector and the pressure vessel wall. The two flow paths were connected at their upper and lower ends in order to form a closed circuit for natural circulation. The reactor core was suspended within and by the lowest section of the deflector cylinder. The deflector cylinder is suspended at an upper section of the pressure vessel at the level of the vessel access hole to allow the removal of the unit deflector cylinder-reactor core. The heat exchangers are disposed within an upper region of the interspace between deflector and pressure vessel wall and are suitably constituted by vertical tube bundles each provided with entrance and exit headers for the working fluid. The headers are suitably disposed so as to form plugs to close lateral openings in the pressure vessel wall. (IIB)
