FUEL ELEMENTS FOR NUCLEAR REACTORS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4694137
Rod shaped fuel elements, the sheath and the end caps of which have very thin walls 0.4 mm thickness, were developed. Both the sheath ends and the end caps are slightly conical, 0.005 cm/cm, so that the caps can be mechanically fastened in the sheath prior to yielding. Preferably, two spaced welds are applied. The invention is illustrated with a fuel rod, consisting of a column of UO/sub 2/ pellets in a thin stainless steel can. The pellets are chamfered and their end surfaces slightly concave. Thus it is possible to press the can in the grooves that are formed by the chamfered edges while the adjacent concavities perrait a certain sxial dilation of the fuel. (NPO)
