A sheathed reactor fuel element with the fissile rod spaced from the end caps by heat-insulating spacers is designed so that the spacers are restrained from lateral movement against the sheath. The fissile rod has a series of circumferential grooves along its length, and the sheath is pressed into these grooves to limit creep in the sheath under thermal cycling. The end caps have grooves for accommodating thin rings of natural U which are to release fission products as warning in event of failure of the edge welds. The end caps also have recesses for locating the spacers and preventing them from stressing the sheath. (D.L.C.)
