A reactor fuel element comprising a fuel member enclosed in a protective sheath closed by an end cap is fabricated with two spaced welds sealing the end cap to the sheath to prevent the end cap from resulting in a leak. The first weld is done in the conventional way at the outside contact of the sheath and the end cap, while the second weld is made by forming a recess in either the sheath or end cap, filling the recess with a strip of magnesium alloy, and melting the strip by electric resistance heating.
