A sheathed reactcr fuel element with end caps sealed to the sheath by edge welds is patented. Each end cap weld is covered by a shroud member sealed to the sheath by a circumferential edge weld. Close to the circumferential edge weld, circumferential ridges on the sheath and shroud member project radially by at least the amount of projection of the edge weld. The shroud member on one end of the fuel element has a cup-like recess, and the shroud member on the other end has a complementary cone-like projection to permit a column of fuel elements to be end-stacked in a reactor fuel channel.
