A screwed end cap is designed for closing the ends of a sheathed fuel element. The end cap has an insert of fuel material in a circumferential groove in the skirt of the cap for giving early warning of faulty end seals, and longitudinal grooves are provided for venting the circumferential groove to the interior of the sheath.
