IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO FUEL ELEMENT FABRICATION

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4685474
A method of loading ceramic pellets into a tubular metal can is patented. The can has smaller cross-sectional dimensions than the pellets to provide a tight fit between the pellets and the can at ambient temperatures. The can is surrounded by a high-frequency induction-heating coil, which heats the can to a temperature at which the pellets can be inserted. The can and a magazine containing the pellets are connected and evacuated, and when the can reaches the proper temperature, a push rod pushes the pellets out of the magazine into the bore of the can. The method may be used for loading ceramic fuel pellets into a reactor fuel-element can. (M.P.G.)
