IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO NUCLEAR REACTOR FUEL ELEMENTS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4684914
A method of closing the end of a tubular fuel-element can containing fissile material and filler gas is patented. The can is closed by an end plug, which is an interference fit in the bore of the can. The plug is cooled until it can be inserted in the can. When the plug becomes the same temperature as the can, it seals the can and prevents gas from leaking in or out. The can is then permanently sealed by welding the joint between the plug and the can. In one method of carrying out the invention, the can is evacuated and filled with helium at low pressure while the end plug is being cooled. (M.P.G.)
