A method and apparatus for closing the ends of sintered metal tubes are patented. The invention pertains particularly to thin-walled pipes of sintered Al containing considerable amounts of Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/, which may be used for reactorfuel-element sheaths. A cup-shaped plug is inserted in the pipe, and the plug and pipe are heated and rotated by means of a steel ring surrounding the pipe. The plug is pressed against the inside wall of the pipe by a mandrel pressing against the inside wall of the plug, and the surfaces become welded to each other. The design of the steel ring and the mandrel are described. (M.P.G.)
