PSEUDOMONAS AERUGINOSA INFECTION AND ITS CONTROL IN THE RADIOBIOLOGICAL RESEARCH PROGRAM AT OAK RIDGE NATIONAL LABORATORY
Studies have emphasized the necessity for extreme care in housekeeping procedures as a deterrent in the spread of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Observance of the usual sanitary precautions in hanuling of cages, equipment, food, and water must be supplemented by the use of suitable disinfectants to prevent the spread of the organism through the colony. The use of hypochlorite in drinking water and as a disinfectant for various equipment reduced markedly the incidence of P. aeruginosa although complete eradication of this agent was not achieved. It may not be possible to detect the presence of pseudomorads in every instance of fecal or water sampling, and the current bacteriological tests are only indicators of their relative frequency and number. Properly employed and evaluated, these techniques are extremely useful in a control program. (auth)
