The effects of solvent, solvent/monomer ratio, addition of water to styrene solutions, pre-irradiation dosage, grafting temperature, and grafting time on the amount of styrene grafted to viscose rayon yarn were studied. Samples of 5 denier x 24 and a 1000 deg C Co/sup 60/ gamma source were used. It was observed that methanol was the best solvent for grafting, and the addition of a small amount of water to the Styrene solution would accelerate the grafting remarkably. The optimum grafting temperature was about 50 deg C. Furthermore, the amount of styrene grafted to the viscose rayon yarn preirradiated in methanol was 2 times greater than that of yarn pre-irradiated in air. Preliminary experiments of grafting of methyl methacrylate were also carried out using a Van de Graaff electron accelerator as the radiation source. Measurements of the mechanical properties of the yarns showed that the elastic recovery at room temperature and the thermosetting properties were improved by grafting. (OID)
