Title: GAMMA-RAY INDUCED GRAFT COPOLYMERIZATION OF STYRENE ON CELLULOSE ACETATE. PART II (in Japanese)

Journal Article · · Proc. Japan Conf. Radioisotopes
OSTI ID:4707728

The gamma -ray induced graft copolymerization of styrene on cellulose acetate was studied both by immersion and preirradiation techniques in the presence of various solvents. The effects of dose rate and monomer concentration on the grafting and the degrees of polymerization (P/sub n/) of grafted polystyrenes were interpreted in terms of ordinary kinetics. and stress was put on the chain transfer with solvents. In the immersion technique, the styrene-- solvent mixture was added to the acetate yarns and the whole mixture was sealed under high vacuum and irradiated with gamma -rays of Co/sup 60/ at a given dose rate. In pre-irradiation technique, the acetate yarns were irradiated at 6 x 10/ sup 4/ r/hr for 16 hr at room temperature in air and stored at 25 deg C for a week. After that, the monomer-solvent mixture was added to the irradiated yarns, and the whole mixture was sealed under high vacuum and heated for 3 hr at a given temperature. It was found that the efficiency of grafting by the immersion method decreased with increasing dose. The saturated amount of grafting by the pre-irradiation method was considered to be directly proportional to P/sub n/ of grafted polystyrene and both were depressed hy the presence of solvents.
