GAMMA-RAY INDUCED GRAFT COPOLYMERIZATION. VIII. GRAFT COPOLYMERIZATION OF STYRENE ON CELLULOSE ACETATE BY A PREIRRADIATION TECHNIQUE (in Japanese)

Journal Article · · Rept. Govt. Ind. Res. Inst., Nagoya
OSTI ID:4035896

The gamma -ray-induced graft copolymerization of styrene on cellulose acetate fibers by a pre-irradiation technique in air was studied. The grafting was not affected by the storing condition of the irradiated fibers, but the degree of grafting increased slightly with irradiation temperature from --78 to +100 deg C. The grafting seemed to be initiated by fairly stable peroxides produced in the irradiated fibers. The degree of grafting did not increase linearly but tended to saturate with the dose due to the decomposition of peroxides in the irradiated fibers by further irradiation. The rate of grafting showed 2.9 power dependence on the monomer concentration (as a benzene solution) at the dose rate of 6 x 10/sup 4/ r/hr. The grafting was completed within 60 min above 65 deg C, and the total degree of grafting decreased with the grafting temperature. Dependence of the molecular weight of grafted polystyrene (obtained by the hydrolysis of grafted fibers) and the total degree of grafting on the grafting temperature are discussed, and the activation energy of the peroxide decomposition was estimated to be about 25 kcal/mol.
