GAMMA-RAY INDUCED GRAFT COPOLYMERIZATION. IX. EFFECTS OF SOLVENTS ON THE SOLUTION GRAFT COPOLYMERIZATION OF STYRENE ONTO CELLULOSE ACETATE BY A PREIRRADIATION TECHNIQUE (in Japanese)
The gamma -ray-induced graft copolymerization of styrene on cellulose acetate fiber by a pre-irradintion technique in air was studied in the presence of various solvents, mainly from the viewpoint of the chain transfer. Aromntic hydrocarbon solvents with larger side chains decreased the degree of polymerization of the grafted polystyrene and percentage of grafting markedly, and a remarkable effect was observed by the addition of carbon tetrachloride. By assuming that the process of chain transfer in homogeneous systems is applicable to this heterogeneous reaction, the transfer constants for solvents and an activation energy were calculated from the degree of polymerization of graft polystyrene and the amount of grafting. The coincidence of the calculated values with those already reported for homogeneous polymerization of styrene was almost satisfactory. (from NSA of Japan)
