LUMINESCENCE OF NEUTRON IRRADIATED ZnS PHOSPHORS

The results of experiments on the intensity and spectrum of luminescent emission for ZnS phosphors irradiated with neutrons are reported. It was found that a cubic ZnS crystal is more stable and more closely packed that a hexagonal one. Fractional luminescence intensity after irradiation was dependent on the amount of Cu activator. Neutron irradiation increased the relative intensity of the blue emission band compared to that of the green band for the samples activated with Cu of 0.001 or 0.01 wt%. The change was also observed at room temperature. No change in the spectrum was observed for samples activated with Cu of 0.5 wt% and for samples activated with Ag at either temperature. (P.C.H.)
