A design for heat-exchange surfaces particularly, but not exclusively, for reactor-fuel-element sheaths is patented. The cylindrical heat-exchange surface consists of an even number of longitudinally extending zones of helical fins, the pitch of the fins in each zone being of the opposite hand to that in adjacent zones. Fins to prevent the fuel element from bowing are provided at the junctions of the longitudinally extending zones. The bow-restraining fins are subjected to balanced forces from the coolant flow between the helical fins, and therefore they do not need extensive cross-bracing. Details of the design are described.
