A nuclear fuel element casing with helical fins is patented. The casing consists of a cylindrical body with fins that form sets of helical segments around the body. The helical segments in a set are parallel to one another and extend longitudinally along the body. The direction of the helices in one set is opposite to that of the adjacent set. The fins in one set are connected to the fins in adjacent sets to form complete herring bones around the body of the casing. The casing has the advantages of a large exchange surface and a high coefficient of heat exchange. Variations in the geometry of the fins are described. (M.P.G.)
