THE MANUFACTURE OF EXTERNALLY-FINNED TUBING

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4636278
A method of making an externally finned metal tube for heat exchangers or reactor fuel cans is patented. The method is particularly applicable to the manufacture of herring-bone fin patterns on cylindrical tubing, in which oppositely inclined sets of oblique fins are formed on adjacent parts of the surface of the tube. An elongated straight tubular workpiece is formed with a number of longitudinal flat sides separated by longitudinal groves in the outer surface. By conventional machining operations, sets of parallel fins are machined on each flat side. The workpiece is then expanded to deform the flat sides until the tube has an overall cylindrical form, from which the fins project. The expanding operation is performed by forcing a plug of circular section through the bore of the workpiece. (M.P.G.)
