A helically finned tube and a method of making the tube are patented. A tube having fins parallel to the tube axis is gripped at a number of points along its length and twisted in different directions about the axis of the tube. The twisting is performed while the tube material is relatively plastic just after extruding or heating. The fins of the resulting tube form helical paths having at least one change of hand. The helicity of the fins may also be different. Longitudinal secondary fins or splitters'' may be inserted through narrow slots in the helical fins and may also be made helical by further twisting. The tubes are designed for nuclear fuel cans. The varying helicity should increase the turbulence in the flow of coolant between the fins and therefore improve the heat transfer, and the change in direction of the helicity should equalize thrust on the splitters, thereby reducing vibration.
