IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO FINNED METAL TUBING

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4009844
An externally finned metal tube for use as a reactor fuel can is designed which is comparatively easy to fabricate and results in a balanced gas- flow turbulence. The tube has a fin pattern comprising splitter fins extending in the longitudinal direction to define sectors, and heat exchange fins in each sector projecting laterally from the tube with their opposed faces parallel to one another and extending helically along the tube. The fins in each sector may be plane skew fins or a group of parallel V-shaped fins, and the plane of the fins may be arranged to bisect the angle between the splitter fins defining that sector. Since all the fins in any one sector are parallel to one another, the tube can be fabricated by a die-stamping operation. Several embodiments of the finned tube and tools for their fabrication are described. (D.L.C.)
