ELECTRON-PROTON COINCIDENCES IN INELASTIC ELECTRON-DEUTERON SCATTERING

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4675583
Electron-proton coincidences in electron inelastic scattering by deuterons were used to study proton form factors. Two magnetic spectrometers were used with an electron counter and a multichannel system to count the coincidences. The experimental apparatus, procedure, and problems are described, and calculation of the cross section (particularly the corrections) is examined. The difference of the experimental and theoretical cross sections (4.2 plus or minus 0.5 x 10/sup -32/ and 3.37 x 10/sup -32/ cm/sup 2//ster/sup 2/ Mev) might be due to a difference of the proton form factors in a bound state from those in the free state. Other possible causes of the discrepancy must also be considered. (D.C.W.)
