SEARCH FOR TIME-LIKE STRUCTURE OF THE PROTON

Journal Article · · Phys. Letters
An attempt was made to observe the process p + p yields e/sup -/ + e/ sup +/, the rate of which depends on the unknown time-like form factors. The equipment and procedure followed in the experiment with a 2.5 Bev/c p beam is described. The cross section at this energy for a point-like proton is estimated to be about 0.25 mu b. No events, however, were observed; and only an upper limit of 2 x 10/sup -32/ cm/ster was determined for the point-like differential cross section, thereby giving evidence against a point-like proton in the time- like region. Evidence for an electromagnetic structure of the proton in the time- like region is also noted. (D.C.W.)
