Fragmentation of a relativistic deuteron into a proton. The structure of the deuteron at small distances

Discrepancies between the experimental cross sections for fragmentation of deuterons into protons in /sup 12/C and those calculated with known two-nucleon wave functions have been analyzed and compared at various energies. The similarity of these discrepancies is interpreted as a manifestation of non-nucleon degrees of freedom of the deuteron at small distances. In the framework of the hybrid model, the cross section for deuteron fragmentation by /sup 12/C is calculated (T/sub d/ = 4.2 GeV) by means of light-front dynamics. The result is in good agreement with experiment.
