IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO NUCLEAR REACTOR FUEL ELEMENTS
A reactor fuel element provided with a device to center the element and prevent vibration due to the flow of coolant in the fuel channel is patented. The fuel element is of elongate form and has a cup-shaped recess at its upper end adapted to be engaged by a cone at the lower end of the next fuel element above it in the stacked column. One end of the fuel element is provided with radially projecting arms, one of which is extensible by some means such as a springloaded bellows. The arm extends until it contacts the wall of the channel, thereby moving the fuel element until the other arms also contact the channel wall and the element is centered and stabilized. The extensible arm can be retracted by the fuel-element-handling grab. The fuelelement design is especially applicable to gas-cooled reactors. (M.P.G.)
