The possible radioprotectant activity of dl-dithiosuccinic acid was tested in guinea pigs exposed to 300 to 800 r (skin dose) of whole-body x irradiation. It was injected intraperitoneally in single doses of 20 and 100 mg/ kg or in 7 daily doses of 10 mg/kg/day. After 11 days 100% of irradiated control guinea pigs were dead, whereas 30% of the animals injected with 20 mg/kg doses were living and 100% mortality was not reached until the 15th day. With the 100 mg/kg dose, slightly less protection was noted, 20% of the animals surviving beyond 11 days. After 300 r (LD/sub 50/), slight protection was also noted, 60% surviving after 7 daily 10mg/kg doses. Protective effects were not obtained with the single 20 and 100 mg/kg doses. Results indicate that the meso form of thls compound is most effective in therapeutic doses, in contrast to the presently tested DL form whlch is most active in prophylactic doses. (BBB)
