RADIOPROTECTIVE ACTION OF ORGANIC THIOLS. I. RADIOPROTECTION WITH MESO-DTS (MESO-DITHIOSUCCINIC ACID) (in Italian)

The effect of meso-dithiosuccinic acid in irradiated guinea pigs was tested since it resembles other radioprotective agents in its chemical structure and therapeutic activity in heavy metal poisoning. When injected intraperitoneally for 7 days in daily doses of 10 mg/kg, it did not prolong the life of guinea pigs exposed to 800-r, wholebody doses of x rays. At doses of 20 or 100 mg/kg/day it did not protect animals exposed to 800 r. At l0 mg/kg/day it had only a slight protective effect (20%) after 400 r. After midlethal doses (300 r) a 10-mg/kg/day intraperitoneal drug dose increased survival to 80-100% from 4050% in untreated irradiated controls. Doubling the drug dose did not increase its effectiveness. It is concluded that this compound has radioprotective activity at midlethal x-ray doses, and that the amount of it required to exert this effect is far below its toxic or lethal doses. (BBB)
