Morpho-functional changes in guinea pigs irradiated and protected with neurotropic drugs

Luvatren (methylperiodol) and Surmontil (trimeprimin) in doses of 50 mgr/ kg and 120 mgr/kg respectively exhibited a radioprotective effect in guinea pigs irradiated with 800 R. An increased urinary elimination of 17- hydroxycorticosteroids and of 17-ketosteroids, more marked in protected guinea pigs, was observed in the first day after irradiation, tending to normalize in the following days. In contrast to the marked dystrophic-necrotic changes in the adrenals of irradiated and nonprotected guinea pigs, the dystrophic changes observed in the protected animal adrensis were more attenuated.
