THE COLUMN CHROMATOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS OF 17-KETOSTEROIDS IN URINE DURING THE TREATMENT OF HORMONE-INDEPENDENT TUMORS WITH IONIZING RADIATION (in German)
Previously described changes in the urinary steroid fractions at various intervals following Ra and x-ray treatment of various types of cancer are tabulated. In general, changes in these fractions reflected the state of central regulatory mechanisms, especially the pituitary-adrenal system, as influenced by irradiation and metabolic factors altered by the malignant state. Changes in the fractions could generally be correlated with changes in total urinary 17- ketosteroid levels. Changes in 11-hydroxycorticosteroids and dehydroepiandrosterone in particular could be traced to radiation-stimulated adrenocorticotropin activity. Ra treatment of uterine cervical cancer resulted in a marked decline in total 17-ketosteroid excretion, which was generally paralleled by reductions in steroids of Groups I-IX; however, initial elevations in Groups I-VI were sometimes recorded. More moderate reductions were noted in x- ray and gamma -ray treatment of thoracic cancers, while irradiation of some peripheral tumors resulted in marked elevations in 17-ketosteroid excretion, especially in fractions corresponding to Groups IV-V. Changes in these fractions in individual cases are described in detail. (BBB)
