HIGH VACUUM PUMPING SYSTEMS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4665474
A method and apparatus for creating an extremely high vacuum in a structure by means of an electrical vacuum pump and an appendage pump are patented. The structure and electrical pump are first evacuated by cooling the appendage pump, which contains highly sorbent material such as charcoal. The appendage pump is then sealed off from the structure, and final evacuation is performed by the electrical pump. Before cooling the appendage pump, the structure is flushed with a gas having a condensation temperature above that to which the appendage pump will be cooled. The efficiency of the charcoal can be improved by first freezing out water and CO/sub 2/ in a separate chamber of the appendage. The appendage pump should be cooled at least to the temperature of liquid N. (M.P.G.)
