A vacuum pump for use in a system to obtain extremely low pressure is patented. The pump consists of a chamber containing highly sorbent material in direct contact with heat-conducting walls. The area of the conducting walls in contact with the sorbent material must be greater than 5 times the largest projected area of the chamber. The chamber may also contain an inner wall coated with sorbent material. The chamber is connected to the structure to be evacuated and immersed in a refrigerating liquid such as liquid N. When the pressure has been reduced to between 10/sup -1/ and 10/sup -3/ mm Hg, the chamber is sealed off, and the structure is further evacuated by an electrical vacuum pump. (M.P.G.)
