HIGH VACUUM PUMPING SYSTEMS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4642022
The design of a vacuum-pump system for producing valua on the order of 1 x 10/sup -9/ mm Hg is patented. A vacuum-tight chamber containing highly sorbent material, such as activated charcoal, is connected to the structure to be evacuated and to the vacuum pump. The chamber is immersed in a refrigerating liquid and absorbs gas within the structure and the pump until the pressure has been reduced to between 10/sup -1/ and 10/sup -3/ mm Hg. The chamber is then separated from the rest of the system by closing a valve, and the pump reduces the pressure to the desired value. For more surface area of sorbent material, a cylindrical shell can be inserted in the chamber. The sorbent material is held against the inner and outer walls of the shell and against the walls of the chamber by a mesh grid or other gaspervious material. (M.P.G.)
