The nature of the radioprotective action of cystamine (2sminoethyl disulfide) is still not clarified. The problem was iurther studied by comparing the effect of cysteamine and cystamine on the ascitic Ehrlich carcinoina (hyperdiploid strain), irradiated in the ahdominal cavity of the mouse and outside of the organism. Seven days after implantation of the tumor cells, the animals were exposed to a single dose of 400 or 700 r of x radiation at a dose rate of 50 r/minute, both under addition of cysteamine and cystainine and without the protective agents. The results showed that both agents reduce the number of cells exhibiting chromosomic rearrangement to about the same level in the in vivo irradiation experiements. However, only the cystreamine exerted a protective action in the case of irradiation of the tumor cells outside of the organism; its radioprotective effect was about the same as in case of in vivo tests. The cystamine in ascitic liquid outside of the organism did not noticeably affect the radiation injury. This is probably due to the fact that the radioprotective action of the cystamine is caused by its overall pharmacological effect on the organism, resulting in tissue hypoxia and therefore cannot be noted at the cell level.
