Heterotransplantation of the hyperdiploid Ehrlich ascites tumor (E/Dipl) and of hynotetraploid Ehrlich ascites tumor (E/Sto) was carried out in rats previously subjected to whole-body x irradiation with 720 r (LD/sub 50/32/). With an equal number of inoculated cells the time of survival in irradiated rats was shortened by the E/Sto tumor to a far greater extent (average survival time 5 days) than by the E/Dipl tumor (average survival time 13 days). Implantation of tumor E/Dipl cells, injured by repeated freezing and thawing combined with osmotic shock, caused almost the same shortening of survival time as implantation of an equal number of the same nonirradiated cells. A pronounced shortening of survival time was also caused by implartation of mouse kidney homogenate. The time of survival in rats that had received lethally irradiated E/Sto cells was shortened to a far greater extent than that of rats that had received E/Dipl cells irradiated in the same manner. The rapid death of rats after injection of tumor cells killed by repeated freezing and thawing in combination with osmotic shock, or after injection of homogenate of mouse kidney, may be explained by the action of enzymes liberated from the tissues. Differences in the effect of the 2 tumors on survival time are probably due to their immunogenetic variability. (TCO)
